Memory 3 [day 40]: Kururugi Jinja (R2E1.1)
At length you make it to the top, and while he doesn't quite drop you back into your wheelchair, it is very close. This is our new home, he pants as you take an unpaved path to a cool, quiet building that smells of cobwebs and forgotten things. It's a grand structure, your brother tells you; beautiful, with tall ceilings and crystal chandeliers and marbled floors, gorgeous art and beautiful windows letting in light that you don't seem to feel on your skin. He promises the two of you will be happy.
Behind you, someone approaches, bare feet smacking on the stone floor. Who are you? This is my place! The boy--he must be no older than your brother--yells. You cringe at his anger. Why are you saying such lies? This place is old and ugly, none of that stupid stuff you said! Then there's a brief struggle and someone's been struck; there's a cry and it's your brother that's fallen to the ground.
Please, you say, please don't hurt him. We'll do as you say; I haven't seen anything so I promise I won't get you in trouble...
At this, the boy hesitates, shame palpable; a beat, then the slap of his footsteps fades off into the distance. More importantly, you reach desperately for your brother, heartbeat not calming until you feel him wrap his arms around your waist.
TAKEAWAYS
+ and I care about him! I need to help him... [family is important]
+ Why can't I ever see in these things? What was going on?
+ so much low-level fear--what was going on? why were we in this new place? what happened to our parents? why didn't the boy want us to be there?
+ I was hesitant because I was so helpless. but it seemed to work to drive the boy off...? [I need to use whatever tools I have to protect those around me]
