Memory 1 [day 33]: Euphy's memorial (R208 13:08)
You nod, adjusting your grip on the candle in your hands. "I suppose I can't forgive all his sins myself, can I." You almost wish you were strong enough. But in the end, all you can do is focus on what you can do.
"Here," you say, offering the candle. "I've written Euphy's name properly, haven't I?"
Suzaku takes it, the gentle splash of the candle through the water letting you know he's placed it with the others. "Euphy... We'll continue your work, moving towards a peaceful world." There is a pause; fading surprise. "It...seems someone else has remembered Euphy today."
"Someone other than us... Wonderful." And you can't help but feel a warm curl of relief and hope that he's still out there--he's okay.
Memory 2 [day 35]: taking care of Arthur
Memory 3 [day 40]: Kururugi Jinja (R2E1.1)
At length you make it to the top, and while he doesn't quite drop you back into your wheelchair, it is very close. This is our new home, he pants as you take an unpaved path to a cool, quiet building that smells of cobwebs and forgotten things. It's a grand structure, your brother tells you; beautiful, with tall ceilings and crystal chandeliers and marbled floors, gorgeous art and beautiful windows letting in light that you don't seem to feel on your skin. He promises the two of you will be happy.
Behind you, someone approaches, bare feet smacking on the stone floor. Who are you? This is my place! The boy--he must be no older than your brother--yells. You cringe at his anger. Why are you saying such lies? This place is old and ugly, none of that stupid stuff you said! Then there's a brief struggle and someone's been struck; there's a cry and it's your brother that's fallen to the ground.
Please, you say, please don't hurt him. We'll do as you say; I haven't seen anything so I promise I won't get you in trouble...
At this, the boy hesitates, shame palpable; a beat, then the slap of his footsteps fades off into the distance. More importantly, you reach desperately for your brother, heartbeat not calming until you feel him wrap his arms around your waist.
memory 4 [day 42]: my coronation (R207 04:42)
"I know it's sudden, but there's something I would like your help with. I would like to reinstate the Special Administrative Zone of Japan. There, Britannians and Numbers will be treated equally. Elevens will once again be gcalled "Japanese."
"There was an unfortunate misunderstanding last time this plan was proposed. However, I don't think its intentions were wrong. To create an equal, gentle world.
"Black Knights, please participate as well. If we all recognize our mistakes, I believe we can all move forward together."
The speech goes over like a lead balloon, but you'd expected that. Suzaku is oddly quiet as he takes you back to your quarters.
"Suzaku..." You reach desperately for his hand. "What Euphie tried to do wasn't wrong, was it?"
His voice is sad, as you expected. "No, Euphie wasn't the one who was wrong."
What you hadn't expected was his lie.
no subject
+ holy moley I'm a princess
+ also a governor?
+ guess I really was blind? how the heck'd that even work out?
+ why are the japanese "Numbers"?
+ what bad happened last time? Is that what Euphie did? Because Euphie's dead, and Suzaku seems to think he's wrong...?
+ am I a bad guy???
TAKEAWAYS
+ and I care about him! I need to help him... [family is important]
+ Why can't I ever see in these things? What was going on?
+ so much low-level fear--what was going on? why were we in this new place? what happened to our parents? why didn't the boy want us to be there?
+ I was hesitant because I was so helpless. but it seemed to work to drive the boy off...? [I need to use whatever tools I have to protect those around me]
memory 5 [day 46]
memory 6 [day 47] :: father's speech (R207 00:00)
I don't want to be robbed. I don't want to be killed. That's the reason people hide behind lies like "justice" and "ethics"--to hide their weak selves.
The first and only rule of this world is the strong eat the weak. And we shall devour everything: people, wealth, power--the world itself!
We Britannia will destroy the world's lies, and return truth!
All hail Britannia!
memory 7 [day 48] :: After a year, Lelouch's voice (R205 22:00/06 00:01)
There is a long silence on the other end of the line, and your voice--your questions grow frantic. It has to be him. It has to be him. You want to be with him, to hold him like before. Just to call your name would be enough.
"We need to pretend we don't know each other for a while," he says at length. "Until then--I love you."
And in the next instant his voice is the unassuming mask he slips on for charming teachers and other lies, and you play along as he gives the phone back to Suzaku. And it's over so quickly you could almost believe it never happened at all.
The ache at the pit of your stomach is real enough.
memory 8 [day 56] :: prisoner 107 (R2E14 09:52)
You cannot get close enough to touch her even if they'd allow such a thing--your wheelchair is too wide to navigate the narrow path up to Kallen's cell. But that doesn't mean you cannot make certain your prisoner--your old friend--is alright. You've asked that she be provided with clothes befitting a noble of Britannia, or at the very least, those befitting a friend of the viceroy. Just because she's kept behind a thick wall of bullet- and shock-proof glass doesn't mean she cannot be treated in a civilized manner, no matter what the others said.
"I can't believe it...to think that Nunnally was really a princess," Kallen says, again.
"I'm sorry to have lied to you."
"Same goes for me." Perhaps. You continue on smoothly, not even pausing to allow the idea of an awkward pause.
"I miss the days at Ashford... I was told not to meet with Milly or any of the others, so Suzaku really is the only one I can talk to. They also say that my brother is missing..."
A brief pause; you imagine Kallen shifts--smiles. "What kind of brother was he? I had a brother of my own..."
You're happy that you can talk about your brother--finally, to someone, anyone--but especially to someone who doesn't hate him...someone who remembers not only who he was, but that he was.
Someone enters during your talk--Suzaku, from the stride. He's angry; his tones are clipped as he asks you for permission to borrow "prisoner 107". You allow him his interrogation; friendship does not override work, but you leave with mixed feelings for the friends you knew, and the parts of them you hadn't known.
memory 9 [day 57] :: mao (s1
memory 10 [day 64] :: I am your enemy (R2E22 20:30)
It was deceptively simple: one press of a button. One launch of a missile. In an instant, centuries of culture are wiped out, just like that. Schneizel sends off the warhead and requests more tea in the same breath.
Then he gathers you all off to the atrium, to call your brother. "I don't recognize you as emperor," he tells Lelouch. "You are unfit. But she is."
You're certain the camera pans to you. As befits your role, you keep your head high. "Lelouch...Suzaku. I am your enemy."
Before this started, Schneizel assured you he'd take care of the hard part. Deep inside, you're uncertain that he has.
memory 11 [day 65] :: the slow death of the special administrative zone (R2E08 04:40)
The Special Administrative Zone of Japan was quite an announcement, but much less of an accomplishment. The posters have been made, the staff assigned, the living quarters cleaned and restocked. No one has moved in.
There are rumors: that the poorer would-be Japanese do not trust the government, not after last time. That those on track to Honorary Britannianhood refuse to give up their gains. The other royals and nobles whisper of your failure, the implication that the "little princess" is unfit loud and clear. "Remember your role," your regent scolds. There is no word from the Black Knights.
And time stretches on.
memory 12 [day 66] :: origami wishes
Later, it became second nature before a difficult test; before a day when your brother said he needed to go on a school outing or do something to represent Ashford. You teach Shirley and the rest of the student council, and while they never see it all the way through, much less find it the soothing exercise you do, it's fine.
"They say if you fold a thousand cranes, your wish will come true."
"What will you wish for?" they would ask, usually thinking it would be something a girl your age ought to be interested in. But all you want is a place where you and your brother can be happy and left in peace. So the answer is clear, and never changes.
"A gentle world."
